53 Years of Midwinter History
The Midwinter Expedition entered the New Millennium in its 42nd year. From its first, which was an expedition called "The Wiltshire White Horse Hike", the expedition has been going further afield. This trend started in the 1961-62 expedition when they visited the Isle of Wight. 1968 saw the expedition take place over Easter, this was due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease. Shortly after this the Expedition was seen to walk the south part of "Offas Dyke" in 1971-72, and return the next midwinter, 1972-73 to walk the northern part of "Offas Dyke".
During the next 10 years the Midwinter grew in size. The 25th Midwinter Expedition, which visited the Lake District, saw 125 young people taking on the challenge. This was the first time the event had to be split into two expeditions, as finding a hall for this number of people was impossible. In 1984-85, the 26th Midwinter, (again with two expeditions) visited the Peak District, an area visited once before on the 16th Midwinter (1974-75).
Since then the expedition has visited many areas of great beauty such as: The North Yorkshire Moors, The Cambrian Mountains, Northumberland and the Cheviots, Dartmoor, Snowdonia, Scottish Central Highlands, The Yorkshire Dales, The Cumbrian Mountains, South-western Lake District, Glen Coe and the Scottish Western Highlands, and the Cairngorm and Mondoliath Mountains. All the areas visited are unique and have their own charm which, if lucky, are enhanced by snow
And so to the Expedition Today.........
The Midwinter Expedition is a walking holiday for Wiltshire Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Guides, Scout Network, Young Leaders and Leaders. The expedition starts on 27th December, an excellent way to burn off those extra pounds gained over the festive season! During the week you will be walking in some of the highest or remotest areas of the country, which is both challenging and exciting, with of course guidance from experienced and qualified mountain leaders. If snow is present then there may be the opportunity for you to learn how to use technical equipment.
The evenings are also filled with as much fun as the day's events, with an entertainment programme that is certainly not to be missed under any circumstances. The expedition knows how to celebrate the New Year, with a party atmosphere, entertainment and good food that certainly makes it the place to be.
This all adds up, the fun, excitement and a sense of achievement that has driven so many people to take part in the one and only Wiltshire Midwinter Expedition.
