| Introduction | Site History | |
This 3 acre site is secluded and set in an area of astounding natural beauty, nestling under the Wiltshire Downs. It is open all year round. It has open views, and is a good centre for exploring Wiltshire, with Stonehenge and Salisbury within easy distance. Good hiking country abounds, with Salisbury Plain to the South and Savernake Forest to the North East. The site has altar fires, flush toilets in the building with male and female showers. There are facilities for less able-bodied people. There is a payphone on site. The site is 25 miles from Swindon, 3 miles from Devizes, 23 miles from Salisbury. Plans are finalised for a new training and sleeping block for which planning permission has been obtained, plus the upgrading of the exisiting facilities. Present facilities include main hall, medium sized seminar room, four tutor rooms, kitchen, dining area, an open air Chapel and camp fire grill. |
The property was built in about 1940 for the Land Army, and was used by them until after the war, when Kennet District Council purchased it. They ran the site as a caravan and camping site (with wardens accomodation) until 1965. The Wiltshire County Scout Council rented the property from the District Council for some 20 years, before being given the opportunity to purchase the site, which we did in 1990. Since then, various improvements have been made including a new car park. The site comprises of the buildings, 3 large fields and is used for training courses (Scouting and Guiding), various meetings of committees (County, District and Group), camps and activities.
