Like all voluntary groups we need adult (ie. over 18) help, both as uniformed leaders in the Scout Movement and on the Executive Committee.
Uniformed leaders come from many backgrounds, and there is no experience neccesary. Each section generally has a section leader, and a number of assistant section leaders. Between them they organise and run their own section, with help and advice from other leaders and the excellent publications available from Gilwell Park, the headquarters of UK Scouting.
There is a new training system for leaders that helps them to understand the requirements of the Scouting Programme that is the back-bone of Scouting. This training takes place evenings and weekends over a four year period, at the end of which you will gain you Wood Beads. A lot of the new training is recognised by employers, and a knowledge of First Aid is an advantage in all walks of life.
1st Tidworth meets half the cost of the new leaders uniform and all the cost of training. The positions are unpaid, except for the pleasure of when things have gone really well!
To back the leaders up we have an Executive Committee, with a Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary etc. The Exec is responsible for maintaining finances, the Hut, and generally ensuring that the leaders can get on with looking after the kids.
If you want to help either as a leader or by serving on the Exec, contact me from the Links page. Only don’t let anyone tell you “it’s only a couple of hours a week”!. It can be a lifetime of endeavour if you want it to be, especially now that the upper age limit has been abolished!
